Elliott Wins Human Services and Civil Rights Award

Special Education teacher Kerri Elliott has won the 2010 IEA-NEA Human Services and Civil Rights Award. Elliott’s work with the people in the Tanzanian village of Kilimahewa during her volunteer stint in 2008 has resulted in school supplies and textbooks for the village’s children.

Elliott led a drive to fill backpacks with 70 items each for schoolchildren. Later she coordinated “Prom On A Dime,” which raised $1,500 to buy textbooks. Elliott returned to Kilimahewa in 2009 to purchase and deliver the books.

Elliott serves as co-director of Project Kilimahewa. To learn more about the village, the challenges it faces, and how you can help, click here.
